The Koran is a tough nut, because like the old testiment things have to be taken on interpretation and faith.
But based on the way that certain passages are written, interpreting them singly is how the radical Iman's are able to convince radical Islam that its their duty to murder and kill anyone who either dosen't believe or stands opposed.
I believe it was rev Lovejoy in the Simpson's who was challenged by the whole God hates gays by Lisa said it was stated somewhere in the back of the bible.
In essence, while it talks about killing and taking hostages, there are also segments in the Koran that completely condemn the slaughter of innocents, and condemns the slaughter of hostages.
