I wouldn't say the person was "disciplined" for it, but a warning email was sent to refer to Christmas as Christmas rather than x-mas.

If management at your company are Christian traditionalists, then this should have been a non-issue to them. Traditionally, the Greek letter
Chi has been used as an abbreviation for "Christ". Because Chi resembles the letter "X" in our alphabet, that letter is substituted for Chi and thus Christmas becomes Xmas.
Sometime in the last 20 years or so, angry Christians who don't know the history of their own religion but want something to get riled up about started attacking the use of Xmas as a shortened form of Christmas because they thought this was "removing Christ from Christmas."
