The Jays would set themselves back a year or two by wasting prospects and big money on a guy like Papelbon.

The closer position should be filled from with-in so we avoid situations like this past season where we were supposed to have an open try-out to the position, but it was basically handed to Gregg by Cito because he'd done it in the past. It also avoids scenarios where the closer is the be-all, end-all guy to close games and isn't pulled when he's clearly having a bad night and can't get the job done.
