True... but China isn't anywhere near as totalitarian as it used to be. There is a lot more personal freedom than you believe... that and a lot of progress has been made in the last 20 or so years and use of violence is down considerable margins. There is a great deal of talk now as a younger generation of "communists" enter the Chinese politburo and are advocating free speech and a path towards general open elections within 40 years.
The younger generation saw what happened to the Soviet Union and are afraid of allowing rapid change to take place. Most do believe the reform is necessary now but are either waiting for the old guard to die out to enact changes or trying to introduce them more gradually so as not to collapse the state.
