From what I've read the 2nd generation Kobo is a big improvement on the first. It doesn't have as many features as the Kindle or Sony reader, but if you don't need fancy features it's an option. It's actually what I'm leaning towards right now - I'd rather be able to read ePub books than tie myself to Amazon, and the extra features on the Sony (touch screen, reading Word files, etc.) aren't worth the cost to me.
