It's technically possible to take your old 360 hard drive out of its enclosure and put it in the new xbox. The downside being that the hard drive would be hanging off(unsupported) the connector, which has raised warranty concerns.
I believe I also read something about being able to use the hard drive transfer cable to plug the old drive to the new xbox, and it will supposedly work as a regular drive.
