Should be able to. That's what I'm getting one for, and mine is an early 2008 (non-unibody) model.
I'm also doing this:
http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/index.html. I'll use my new SSD as the system drive and stick the 500GB drive that's in there now in the DVD bay, as a second drive. Then take the DVD drive and stick it in the free USB external enclosure.
On paper, everything sounds good...
