I'm campaigning for a Kindle for Christmas.
After some research it seems like the Kindle is nicer hardware and better bang for your buck. The Kobo's advantages come from being cheaper and you can check out library books with them. I'm sure at some point you'll be able to do the same with the Kindle.
You can only order the Kindle from amazon.com I believe, meaning you have to get it shipped to Canada, so it's closer to a $180 investment.
