As a semirelated sidenote, my wife just left the evangelic-lutheran state church here in Finland at the age of 32, actually to my great surprise, since we really haven't discussed the topic much.
There's a bit of a boom of people leaving the church here in Finland due to recent attention brought on the churches intolerance of sexual minorities, but that was not her reason, although possibly a contributing factor.
She's a biochemist. She went to church with her grandmother. The priest talked about the genesis, and she realized that not only does she not believe that old story, as a scientist she can't really support spreading that story, which she considers nonsense.
(I've never been religious. I'd call myself an atheist if that didn't carry the implication that religion is such a big deal I'm supposed to define myself through it, no matter what.)
