I don't think that any of what you have said here is unreasonable. As long as you're passing a slower vehicle, the guy behind you should (emphasis on "should") be smart enough to realize what's going on and give you a little room and time to finish your pass.
As for left turns on highways, I realize that it is impossible to have interchanges everywhere, but intersections on dual carriageways are scary for a number of reasons. You've got traffic crossing (or potentially not stopping at their stop sign), cars turning left off of a fast highway and then having to cross two lanes of oncoming traffic (like what you've said - and hoping not to get rear-ended), cars slowing to turn right, cars entering the highway without an on-ramp and hardly any room to get up to speed, etc.
There are just so many things that can screw it all up where a secondary road meets a main highway. If there's one thing that scares me a bit on highways it is intersections. All you can do is stay aware of what's going on and what potentially might happen, and then hope that others are being just as aware (good luck!).
