I generally follow the rule of switching to the right lane when someone who is going faster than me is coming up behind me. However, there are a few scenarios where I do not:

Scenario 1 - If I'm in the left lane, proceeding to pass, passing, or finishing my pass and the guy who is going faster than me decides to sit about a half car length off my bumper until I'm done passing. Yes, you're going faster, yes I can see that, but you don't need to endanger both of us by tailgating me in order to get your point across. I'm passing someone - kindly reduce your speed, keep at a safe distance, and then pass me once I'm done. I won't slow down to move in behind the vehicle I'm trying to pass so you can zoom by me. Nor will I cut in front of the vehicle I have just passed at an unsafe distance so that you can zoom by me.

Scenario 2 - If my turn to the left is coming up shortly. Love this one on the highway. I'm in the left lane as I know my turn is coming up fairly soon and some guy is on my tail because I'm not getting over for him. Same thing - Slow down, keep at a safe distance, and wait until my turn signal comes on and I subsequently go into the left turn lane. This situation can arise when a highway is very busy and I can see that I'll need to get into the left lane a ways before my turn, as I may not have a chance to closer to my turn due to constant passing traffic on the left. Maybe I should start signalling a kilometre away so these wonderful drivers get the point. I suspect they'd still tailgate me though.

Scenario 3 - If I'm in the left lane, behind a slower driver and the guy behind me can't figure out that it's not me driving slow it is the person ahead of me, or ahead of them, etc. Guess what, you tailgating me is not going to make me get over so you can then tailgate the guy who was in front of me, etc. Take a deep breath, realize there are cars in front of me going slower, and wait for the situation to sort itself out. But I guess you'd like me to move over or tailgate the guy in front of me so I can get your wonderful point across for you by endangering myself further.
