Is it best to leave the contrast/brightness low during this time...or does it matter if there are going to be no fixed images anyway?

From what I have read the image retention is very good on these Samsungs as long as you break it in for a 100 hours or so.
What I did with my plasma( I did a lot of research, mostly on avsforums, which is a great resource for settings) was to watch a lot of HD programs. If you have HD cable you can leave it on a show that is full screen. Just make sure thier logo ia translucent and watch different channels. Watch a movie, play a game(for an hour or two), just vary it up.

My wife even watched some standard tv with the bars on the side. Just don't do one thing for very long (more than a couple of hours) to begin with.

Don't have it on torch mode. When you buy it, the contrast on factory setting might be higher than you want for the break in period. Do a search of avsforums for your specific model and you should be able to find settings that are good for the break in period.

I didn't do anything special other than watch a lot of full screen shows for the first 100-150 hours and my tv is fine.
