How do you figure? At a base salary of 54k, an 8 hour shift of OT is roughly $620 (if they're paid for a 12 hour shift) or $400 if they're paid for an 8 (which I would assume is more likely). At the top tier it's $950 for a 12 hour shift, and $630 for an 8 hour shift. And as pointed out, it wouldn't be OT on a regular shift.

Not sure how a 6 figure salary is excessive for having to work shift work, having to deal with hazardous materials, and a likely risk of injury/death...
