To me, the NFL rules changes have actually made it more dangerous for receivers because they 'think' they're being protected. You watch the NFL 10 years ago, plays just weren't called where a receiver prances down the middle of the field. The Ronnie Lotts and Rodney Harrisons of the world would have taken the receiver's head off. It took a very courageous and special (and probably Hall of Fame) receiver to run slants. Now anyone runs across the middle and even if helmet-to-helmet on a receiver is outlawed, the receiver will still get hit by shoulders, arms, hips, anything. Those are suicide passes.
