I just saw a follow up show where they had a few of the people who voted to try and find out what they were thinking, how they voted, etc.
There were 85 voters - NFL personnel, HOF voters, journalists, coaches (past and present) and so on. They had them rank all the players on a scale of 1-10, and literally added them up and ranked them on the basis of the total. Jerry Rice scored a 10 on 84 of the 85 ballots. The one who gave a 9 was Pat Summerall, and when asked why he said he didn't give out 10s.
