A nice plasma will run you a lot of money. The cheap plasmas look terrible. You can really find nice LCDs out there nowadays for good prices.

I've heard this before, but don't know if it's true... the idea that lower-end LCDs are generally better bang-for-you-buck than similarly priced plasmas? I do know people who put big bucks ($3k+) into a plasma seem to then swear by that technology forever after. Unfortunately, dropping three grand on a television is out of the question for many of us.
One thing worth considering is waiting just a little longer to pull the trigger. I know very well how hard it can be to hold off, but we're quickly approaching the season of electronic savings!
From Thanksgiving thru Boxing Day you'll see a veritable smorgasbord of discounts, rebates and year-end closeouts advertised by competing stores. If you do your homework beforehand, focusing on the brand/features/connection/reviews/price you
need, you'll be able to shop quickly and intelligently when the deals roll in. A little patience (and some help from CP) is all it should take to nab the TV that's right for you.
I get that you're frustrated... this stuff
is too expensive to not work perfectly... but I assure you the right TV
for you is out there.
