There's no question that the guy was a serious drinker, he was warned by his doctor that his liver was shutting down and basically dying before he turned 4 years old.

this wasn't a guy that just drank heavy when he partied, he needed to be buzzed to go to sleep every night.

I've been there, but I didn't make a career out of it, I was a very heavy drinker for a relatively short period of time (from 18 to 30). I managed to stop drinking, but every once in a while I'll have a beer or a scotch, but I have the ability to stop now. I don't think I was ever a true alcoholic though.

I wasn't anywhere near this guy, but he's right about the smell for the first day or two, and he's espcially around the night mares which were so vivid and real that I'd be chasing phantoms around the house when I work up.

That column is pretty well his confessional, and good for him.
