Interesting. A couple years ago a buddy at work (a pretty reputable business man) was telling me about his brother in law that didn't pay taxes. Basically it came down to the fact that the government isn't allowed to tax its citizens, so instead it taxes a type of fictitional character. You are bound to this character through your SIN. Therefore if you have no SIN, or at least no ties between your money and your SIN, you do not have to pay any taxes on behalf of that fictitional character.

I never really looked into it, but it sounds like this freeman thing is pretty much what he was talking about.
