you have to open up a port (typically 21 for FTP, or something else if you want more security) on your router. If you have an Apple router then it's easy, but so is with Linksys, DLINK. Typically found under port forwarding (you enter the port you want to open, and which internal IP address to forward that port to, i.e. your iMac with FTP Server on it).

Install some FTP server software (i.e. fileZilla server) and off you go.
