There's a similar scam with fake door-to-door home alarm salesmen who target homes with no security signs or stickers on windows. They'll even wear outfits of some fake but legit looking company. There was a ring of it going on in the deep south in newer suburbs just recently. They'll do similar tactics like your neighbor canceled or they have time to do your house as well. The end result is that if the home owner admits that they don't have a home alarm and appears to have decent valuables, they'll come back at a later date when you're not home to do a Break and Enter. If you are sharp enough to buy a home alarm from them they'll keep your deposit then also rob you later. Beware.
