I had something similar happen a few months ago. Our area has been having a lot of trouble with a few of the kids in the neighbourhood over the summer and I ended up making a call to the RCMP at 7:00 AM one morning after some suspicious activity along the trail that runs behind our houses. The RCMP came with the K9 unit and tracked down and arrested 3 youths. A few days later there was one of their homemade torches on the trail at the back of our property (they seem to use these instead of flashlights back there, to go with their KKK grafitti they do I guess). Then 3 days after that I went back there to find a cat head and it's 2 front legs laying next to the torch. The head was cleanly cut off and the 2 front legs it looks like they cut all the muscle at the top of the joint and pulled them out of the shoulder socket. I called the RCMP and they came out to look. They said that they wouldn't be surprised if it was the same kids because they are very disturbed, but there is no way to prove it wasn't done by an animal since there are lots of coyotes and the odd bear that walk back there. I'm 100% sure it wasn't an animal because it was an extremely clean cut on both the head and front legs.
