There is definitely an element of salesmanship (and cargo cult slavishness amongst the fan base), but I also think Apple works really, really hard at making sure the product fits.

The size of the iPad is one example - people might claim that it’s too big, but when Jobs says a 7” is too small for a tablet, he does it with the absolute conviction that comes from who knows how many prototypes.

Apple is the kind of place where they would absolutely obsess over something like screen size. I have no doubt they’ve probably built a prototype iPad in every mass produced LCD size from the iPhone all the way up to the current size and beyond, looking for the one size they felt fit.

Of course, they are also wrong on some things, and have to backtrack - the “nobody wants to watch video on an iPod” line is probably the most famous. But, at least, to their credit, when they do have to go back, they do it right - the iPod Touch is a pretty incredible media player.
