I hate diamonds. Hate seeing them, and especially hated buying one. I also bought a Canadian diamond, got the higher clarity or whatever that deal is, so it's smaller but nicer. My wife still wears the ring, so I guess she liked it. I spent 1750 but that was 6 years ago, and gold's a lot more expensive now. You can get any reputable jeweller to make a ring you like; so shop around with your soon-to-be-fiancee and get their idea of what they like (style, white vs yellow gold, mounting, etc).

Two huge pieces of advice:

1) Get the best diamond you want to pay for. The jeweller will tell you you can replace it with a bigger one whenever; your fiancee/wife won't ever replace it. It's the engagement ring you bought, so buy the best you want to get.

2) Learn the diamond quality rankings. That way you aren't a sucker when you go into the store. And trust me, a lot of stores treat you as a sucker! Size isn't everything (that's not what she said!) - cut, colour, clarity are all equally important when it comes to price.

I also love the idea of the diamond company telling you how much to spend. Come on. Does anyone go to a used car dealership as ask how much they should spend on a car?
