Personally I wouldn't care if my ring was a diamond or just glass. I don't wear mine alot because I'm afraid of losing the diamond (like my mom did) or scratching some kid while I'm teaching swimming lessons.
I think it would depend on the woman... the "25 % salary" thing is old-school.
I like the putting the money to a mortage idea. Or take her on a kick a$$ honeymoon with your savings.
