You're leaving out the costs incurred while those players were on the books. If I but a car for $20,000 and sell it 2 years later for $22,000 that appears to be a profit, but if it cost me $5,000/year to keep it around I've actually lost $8,000.
You can't really pin the blame without knowing who was given control over what, but the fact those palyers were sold for more only tells a small part of the story.
