Yeah, craigslist is full of people offering to pick up things from Ikea or Costco and deliver them for you. It's a bit of a cottage industry. I can get most things I geberally need within 2 blocks of my front door though. Grocery stores, delis, butchers, hardware stores, liquor stores etc. The only downside is that shopping for specific things can be a bit of a transit nightmare. Pretty much everything is available somewhere, but you might have to go to all 4 corners of the island to check off a shopping list, as opposed to hitting a mega mall. That and the fact that the MTA just raised a month pass to over $100 and half the trains don't seem to run on the weekends.
