Neither can anyone else, so I don't see why they'd want to trade me any of those things (food, self-defense, fine lodgings) for gold.
I know Mel Gibson is not infallible, but in those Mad Max movies gasoline, leather outfits, chain mail and steel boomerangs seemed plausibly valuable. Gold, not so much.

then you will be comforted by the fact that i am heavy into seed saving, growing food and could walk out the door right now with a backpack and survive outdoors for as long as i need. gold and silver are an interim wealth preservation if sh*t doesn't hit the fan that badly or it doesn't happen for a while. in other words, i'm hedging all my bets.
