Nenshi has a lot of underdog populist appeal. Last time that happened an upstart lumpen TV reporter (at the time not even the station's star reporter) inexplicably stole the thunder of two well-oiled mayoral campaigns. Incumbent Ross Alger was the dry, boring Ric McIver and Peter Petrasuk the shifty-eyed Ric McIver.
Nenshi has followed city council meetings probably as religiously or even moreso than the average print beat reporter.
Nenshi's actually injected a whole lot of new enthusiasm into local politics, what with his contributions to Civic Camp and other endeavors.
He's the most intriguing politician to hit the local scene in decades.
