As a fan of an SEC team, you can imagine I'm not much into book learnin', but I may have to pick this one up.
I laugh at the excerpt.

Paterno is too old to care about perceived power. He wants what’s fair, and that is a playoff. Four times he led Penn State to undefeated seasons and didn’t win a national championship. Perhaps no other person has been so wronged by the lack of a proper postseason. It may be the only issue where Paterno is considered a forward-thinking revolutionary.
If college football had a playoff from the start Paterno would have been fired ages ago. Playoffs kill coaches. Four times he led the team to undefeated seasons, if there was a playoff would he have won the championship four times? Doubt it, he may have won it once maybe twice. They write this as if Paterno was cheated and he would have won every time in a playoff for sure! In each of those seasons, there was a team or teams that were equal or better. And what if he had a undefeated regular season and got chunked in the first round?
Playoffs = expectations. Coaches that fail in the playoffs get fired.. coaches that win playoffs and fail in subsequent years, get fired.

I am interested in the corruption angle, keeping Bowls just for the sake of grinding out money. I believe corruption exists everywhere regardless of system though. It happens in every professional sport as well.
