I think its because there is no hero and no protagonist. Its easier to focus on people's shortcomings, and that was brought to the forfront for every single character. I don't know if you would say its a brutal hatchet job, but there is no hero in this movie. Just a bunch of real people that suffer from real issues in every day life, no matter how smart or rich and popular they might seem... they're still just people. The best example was the movie starting out with Z trying to be the "big man" to Albright, and for all the money, fame and power Z had, the movie cut out and ended with him sending Albright a Facebook request. I thought that was really well done.
