Got bored today and decided i'd give civ 5 a crack again to see if my opinion of the game changed on the higher difficulty levels. I'll preface this by saying I've never managed to beat civ 3 or 4 on Diety even giving myself a juicy starting spot through the map builder or regenerating til i got a awesome setup. Immortal in Civ 4 I just managed to beat a few weeks ago in the run up to civ 5.

So I load up a small map(6 players, pangea style) on diety. Don't like my starting spot so i move a couple spots to see if anythings decent then plant my settler. Long story short it was over by domination before 500 BC.

After hundreds and hundreds of hours playing civ 1 2 3 and 4(+ alpha centauri of course) I've gotta say this has to be one of the most disappointing games I've ever purchased. Civ 5s going on the shelf after about 30 hours. Hopefully they do some patching in the future but as it stands now i can't even find this game enjoyable.

Lets go over the stupid things the AI did this game.

- 10 turns after Germany and I start a war against France who is the biggest at the time, he asks for peace offering me 2 of his cities, all his gold, 20 gold per turn(not a big deal since he had like +120) all of his strategic resources and all of his luxury resources. Of course this crippled him and 10 turns later i redeclared and wiped him off the map and just leave his capital for fun again.

- Right after that war my army is right beside Germany my former ally now so i delcare war to catch him off guard. Of course 15-20 turns later he does the same thing France just did 50 turns ago. gives me pretty much everything he has for 10 turns of peace. Of course i redeclare and finish him off and just leave his capital for fun again.

- Next up was the English, my militairy advisor told me he had a better army, not sure what he was smoking, but Englands army consisted of about 5 archers and 40 workers, bonus points for disbanding the workers because it gives you gold which you can buy more units with. Take over London and peace out with the English because it's getting monotanous at this point.

- Now all thats left is the Indians, their capital was at the front so i just take it with my army and run to take Berlin and Paris to end the game. Of course The Indians counter attack because and are just about to retake Delhi and I was annoyed because i had to go get it back again to end the game. But low and behold just as they polished off the 2 defensive units i left behind and are about to retake Delhi up pops the dipo screen and they offer me peace. ughh.

So then i go pop Paris and Berlin to finish the game off.

For those counting at home, the 6th civ was taken out by the French early which was why the French were the largest at the start.

The whole time I was fighting the English and Indians at the end, at not one point did Germany or France even try to settle another city. For over 100 turns they just sat there in their capital attempting the one city challenge.

Another incredibly stupid thing was that the city states had better city defences and stronger armies then the major powers, wtf.

The achievement you get on Steam is, Flawless strategy, but nothing could be further from the truth, after a few turns i got bored and auto'd both my workers and my scouts and they were useless all game but it still didn't matter. In the past civs it always seemed like to beat diety you needed to micro manage almost everything in your economy, which i suck at, which is why i never beat it before. Now it just doesn't matter because the AI is soooo bad.

Anyways, thoroughly disappointed with this game, but oh well atleast i can get on with real life til they drop a patch addressing some of these issues and making it challenging.
