Wasn't that the Jedi Academy series.
Zahn was always big on his unstoppable superweapons with the Sun Crusher and the prototype death star both making an appearance.
That series also gave us the truly awful Admiral Daala who was the first woman to be an Admiral in the Imperial Navy and illustrated why it was a truly bad idea thus enforcing inequality in the post emperor empire.
