I don't remember getting that feeling in the Thrawn trilogy but I haven't read that trilogy in 15 years and my memory could have been tainted by other books where Zahn included the blue skinned red eyed feller. Thrawn was certainly not a villain in other books he was in. More of a misunderstood good guy.
