So I bought one of the remotes, and don't regret the decision at all. It's great for browsing my music library through my media server, and I'm sure it would be great for Netflix if/when I get it.
The next step for me would be a Harmony adapter, but at that point I'd have a separate Blu Ray player anyways making it a moot point to get the adapter. Just use the PS3 remote for PS3 applications and the Harmony for watching movies.
