I've done this. Well, actually I put the SSD in the main drive location and a 500GB drive in the optical bay, but it's probably better the other way around since the main drive bay has better shock absorption.

As I understand it, that mod only voids the warranty on the parts affected - the CD drive. The SATA controller should still be covered as Apple allows hard disk swaps in the main drive bay and this is no different.

I wouldn't sent it in for service with the mod though - just undo it, there's no way for them to tell it's been done if you return the superdrive in there.
