i have one and never use it.
its just easier to use the controller IMO. at first i thought it would be nice since i could leave the remote next to the couch so it would be more accessible than my controllers that are stored in my tv stand. however, since you pretty much have to go up to the tv/ps3 to put in the disc, it negated that point.
it also seemed to go through batteries pretty quick. not sure if it had too long of a shutdown time after no button presses, but it went through them pretty darned quick for how little it was used.
another advantage can be not having to remember which six axis button does what, but i found that to be a pretty negligible difference.
those are my thoughts.
