It's tough as hell to build up pucks though. I'm 31-8-2 and I still don't have a legitimate NHL forward, I play Matthias on the first line with a couple of Rochester guys for chemistry. With the way contracts work out, I won't be able to buy a 7,500 pack for a long, long time. So I'm stuck hoping one day the standard pack gives me a forward to work with.
it definitely takes a long time to build a legit team without paying for stuff. i would honestly advise you to sit all your nhl guys while you build up your team. no need to waste a stud like hedman while you are playing easy offline tournaments.

my other piece of advice is to use ahl guys instead of trying to get nhl role players. most ahl guys can be had for the minimum price if you keep an eye on the market. my team is all ahl players and i think the most i paid for any of them is 500 pucks or so. (i got a fully trained irving for a pretty decent price even)

also, as far as contracts, i would suggest checking the market for those. i have had success getting the 25, 30, and 35 game contracts for fairly cheap. my personal rule is that i won't spend more than 10 pucks/game on those. (25 game contract for 250 pucks.) then you can get your guys locked up longer term which allows you to save pucks up for jumbo packs and such.

i have been playing the spring hockey invitational over and over recently. it gives about 500-600 pucks per victory with the 500 bonus after the 4th win. thats about 2800 pucks for 4 games or 700 pucks a game when you factor in the championship bonus. its only on pro difficulty so its pretty easy to beat the cpu even with my scrub ahl only team. if you happen to run into an nhl team or a powerhouse national team, you can always sub in your nhl'ers to give you more of a chance.

anywho, the pucks will build up. since each player loses a contract game each game, you lose 20 at a time. if you can manage to keep buying the longer contracts for around 10 pucks per game, then you are spending 200 pucks a game just to keep your contracts up to date. so if you are earning 700 a game, then you keep 500 in profit. that can go to saving up for packs, or it can go to buying guys.

that is my advice as to how i have done it. i am currently 57-4 in all offline games. 2 losses were disconnect issues, and i lost once on rooke and i lost the other day to the blackhawks on pro as i couldn't beat niemi. as for my team, i have about 8 nhl'ers so far. mostly wings i bought off the market. i am slowly using my rare training cards and contract cards on those guys as they sit in my collection. as i mentioned, i use just cheap ahl players to actually play. its a bit redundant, but it works for me.
