If you know the details that contract isn't as bad as it seems. Sure it was 63 million over 7 years, but the guaranteed money was all in the first two years. Essentially it was like franchising Cassel for two years and than having 5 more years after that if he did work out.

If Cassel doesn't perform than they can axe him with zero cap penalties after this year. It made sense from the standpoint that it's better to take a guy like him surround him with a bad team and try to improve the team in those two years. Come next season, or whenever the NFL gets going if there is a lockout, the team will be in better shape for a young QB to come in, or for them to find a good veteran who comes available. Whereas say they drafted a guy like Sanchez with that #3 pick in 2009, they'd pretty much be paying him the same and he'd be ruined by now.

I think it's easier for a young guy to come to a team with a decent line and skill positions than eventually that guy can take over the team. Basically like whats happened with Flacco of the Ravens.
