I'd be okay with an 18 game schedule if it meant dropping a couple pre-season games. Realistically I think a 3 game pre-season than a 18 game regular season would be okay. Given how systemized the NFL is, and the quality of product that they're striving to deliver, I don't think 2 preseason games would be enough to get teams ready, not that 3 would, but it would make enough of a difference for teams to evaluate depth for 2 games and partially prep their first teams that first game. I just can't see them keeping 4 pre-season games, and than having the extended schedule.
But with 32 teams right now, that 16 game schedule works really, really well. For a league where you can't play every team, it works about as well as you can make it. You don't go more than 4 years without playing any one team, and you see your other conference teams at least once every 3 years at the least.
