Mine were pretty badly impacted, and started growing into my jawbone. By the time I booked an appointment with a dentist I couldn't close my teeth, and was eating soup all day because I couldn't chew.
I had the local anesthetic done, and like others have said if you can handle the pushing, pulling and cracking sensations, it's the way to go. I was out in about an hour, no swelling whatsoever, and by the end of the day was eating solid foods (mainly because it was such a relief being able to chew again). Once the anesthetic wore off completely it was a little sore, but nothing I couldn't drink my way out of.
