I agree, that is one of the best opening lines from a novel I have read. I think that many people have issues with the first book because it has a really bizarre narrative structure:

Roland is walking through the desert, where he remembers meeting Brown, at which time, he told his story of his time in Tull, so instead of moving forwards, the narrative moves backwards for a while before catching up, and then moving forward again.
