Was that the older Dreams (South of the old down town) or the new one (Dreams Villamagna in Riviera Nayarit)? My wife and I stayed at the old one last April and really enjoyed it, but I don't know if it would be all that good for kids. For adults who's idea of a good time is to lay by the beach/pool all day and read books and then go out for a nice meal it was great!
We have also twice stayed at the Palladium Vallarta (about 1 hour north west of the PV airport along the coast) and I think that it would be better (and cheaper) for a family with children. It is pretty isolated so not a good choice if you want to go see the area, but if you want to just stay at the resort it was fine. It is also probably one of the cheapest 4 to 4.5 star resorts in Mexico that I have found. We went during Easter (which is a bit more expensive than usual) for around $1100-$1200 per person.
