I was told before that "affect" should be used as a verb and "effect" should be used as a noun.

However, someone pointed out to me a while ago that it is not always the case, but if you stick that general rule, you probably won't mix them up as much.

The one that always bugs me is "anyways". It just doesn't make sense in most contexts to make the word "anyway" into a plural word.
