Playoff would make for worse schedules in the regular season. There would NO good OOC games cause there no point risking a playoff spot. At least in BCS you have to have good OOC matches in order to get into the top 2 rather than the top 16.
For example Florida, just finish 2nd or 3rd in the SEC and make the playoffs, why play South Florida or travel to Florida State?

And even with a playoff, you still need rankings for seeding. Giving Boise State a 2nd or 3rd seed in a tournament based on the schedule they have this year isn't really fair either.
