Well, the EU just recently banned seal products from Canada and I doubt most people and politicians in the EU are vegans.

Rats are very popular as pets in the UK - and yes they are intelligent and sensitive. We also saw quite a few non domestic ones brought into the wildlife hospital I worked in - which we assisted if they were just injured or euthanised if they had been poisoned.
Some people in Canada have rats as pets too, but I still bet that if a farmer found a nest of rats on his property, he would have no problem destroying them the easiest way possible. He probably won't be bringing them in to the SPCA and paying to get them put down. He might even enjoy it. I know many people who enjoy hunting and grew up shooting critters for fun.

I absolutely disagree with the method the girl used to destroy those puppies and I can't see how anyone doing it could find it funny, but unfortunately, I don't see it as being rare. People kill animals for fun all the time (bear hunting for example). That is why I find the outrage over this incident hypocritical and a little over the top. The other thing is, not every culture sees dogs as "mans best friend". In parts of rural Bosnia, many of the dogs you are going to meet are strays or feral. This unfortunately affects people's attitudes about them (just like even though some people have rats as pets, most still think of the stray and feral rats as vermin). This is why I think people like Michael Bay (offering $50,000) and PETA (offering $2,000) for her arrest, would be better off donating to animal groups in Bosnia to make positive change (same thing with all those calling for her to be murdered).
