I agree on an overall scale, but I think people actually underestimate how big of an impact that relatively small portion of the GOP base has on presidential elections. With the way that the Electoral College works small shifts in a few places turn the entire game, plenty of those places have strong religious right bases. It's rather staggering that the decision of a few hundred people in the Orlando area can basically change the course of the nation for 4 years.
