I would wait for Vail to be released before buying hardware. Because Vail is 64 bit, you won't be able to upgrade your current windows home server to the new OS.

That said, I did a trial of WHS on my server at home and it really rocks. Cost effective and powerful tool for the home user. One thing I learned really fast though, don't expect to plug an existing external drive into the server and use it for anything without it being formatted though. It will format any drive you put in and ask it to use as data storage.
