acer in my experience (i have an acer laptop) aren't as controlling or as proprietary as a company like HP that has to introduce code and hardware in addition to what is already in the package. it is really hard to say if you will get the ability to upgrade; technically it should be possible, but it is hard to be definitive. my gut tells me that you will be able to do it but that depends upon microsoft and acer.
http://www.wegotserved.com/whs-vail-preview/ is a pretty good site and a good write up of the new features. vail just got released in a public preview in mid august; the earlier package was released in april. it is all over the internet so some google searches and avoiding the obvious fanboy stuff and you should get a pretty good picture of the software code.
vail is based upon win server 2008 r2 and should take advantage of all that has happened in the last 5 years in server software.
i have to admit that the new whs is appealing...but i am likely going towards a pure nas device with media server capabilities.
i wish that i had bought the acer!
edit: i just saw the ram specs and it looks like 2gb minimum for vail. that's going to limit some upgrades...and amorak should be careful when buying!
