I'm a bit of a board game geek. I know enough people that enjoy games that we manage to get together with couples often enough to make purchasing the games worth it.

Greatest game of all time is Diplomacy. No question. There is simply no parallel to a perfectly executed stab in Diplomacy.

Some that I own that I really enjoy would include (in no particular order):

Dragon Delta
Through the Desert
Puerto Rico
Agricola
Alhambra
Le Havre

None of these games use dice or the drawing of cards, which is important in my ranking of games. The less chance you are exposed to the more I like the game.

Catan is a good gateway into the industry. I far prefer Cities and Knights over the first two. I actually bought Das Buch with all the pieces for the game and there are some really cool expansions in there. I've seen that you can buy cards for Catan with the correct number of cards for a normalized distribution of the numbers. I don't know if I'd like that.

Carcasonne is a nice quick and easy game, good for newbs.

Stock Ticker is just an awesome game, as long as it's played properly. Which is, of course, as frantically as possible.

Clue and Mastermind are games that will never, ever grow old for me. Timeless classics.

Lost Cities is a great 2 player game. My wife and I spent hours playing that game before we had kids and lost whatever free time we may have had. My wife and I also spent a lot of time playing Empire Builder as a 2 player game. It seemed to work quite well, we enjoyed it. St. Petersburg is also a great easy game. It scales really well, so it works as a 2 player game just as well as it does for a 4 player game.

I've never been a fan of A&A. Too many balance issues in my opinion.

I've heard that Power Grid is very good. I'll have to check it out.
