People who have horrible jobs to do (doctors, morgue workers, slaughterhouse employees, proctologists, etc.) adapt to the unpleasant work they have to do. If they can't do this - by dissociating themselves from the task at hand, using humour, or simply becoming numb or callous - they will lose their heads.
I'm working with the theory this girl lives on a farm, deals with unpleasant things relating to animals all the time, and was given the task of disposing of these unwanted pups. She could have done this in a number of different ways, but chose a method that is less messy than most alternatives, and that does not result in her having to deal with the bodies. She's dissociating herself from the reality of what she's doing. Her apparent enjoyment of the process is simply a method of coping.

It's the same reasoning people use to excuse soldiers who are on video giggling when they shoot people. There was one posted a while ago with snipers killing a defenseless wounded target and laughing about it... which personally, I find more disturbing. I also recall people making jokes about that infant that was mauled by a husky while strapped in a child seat... yet anything to do with hurting animals gets people up in arms. I just don't get it. Don't get me wrong, I would never throw a puppy into a river and would feel bad doing it. I even feel bad when I gut a fish.
When I was really small, I was at a farm visiting family friends (I honestly don't know who they are - I was too young). I was playing with some barn kittens with the girl that lived there. One of them had an injured or deformed paw. We took it to her dad who was working out in the field and he put the kitten on the ground, placed a shovel on the neck and stomped on the back of the shovel. I was horrified but they were very indifferent about it.
